COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is aimed at students and researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities who want to apply CDA within their research. The course offers a general overview of the development of CDA, its main theories and fields of research, but focuses mainly on methodology, that is, on how to do discourse analysis from a critical perspective, which implies taking into account social, cognitive and historical aspects when doing discursive analysis.


The course consists of 20 hours of class. You may register for the entire course or by thematic blocks. Classes will be online.


The course will be taught by Dr. César Rojo and includes a final live session with a lecture given by Teun van Dijk

-Theory of discourse

-Levels: structure, function, process and social interaction

-Dimensions: textual, cognitive, social and historical


13 March: Approaching research from a critical perspective

-Creation of the research corpus
-Objectives of investigation 

-Definition of the theoretical concepts and (quantitative / qualitative) methodological approach

-Criticism of CDA


20 and 27 March: Discourse Semantics

-The definition and analysis of discourse topics

 


APRIL

 

10 and 17 April: Discourse Semantics

-Representation of social actors in discourse 


24 April. Discourse Semantics and Pragmatics 

-The analysis of presuppositions in discourse

 


MAY


8 May. Discourse Semantics and Pragmatics

-The analysis of implications in discourse


15 May: Presentations of students' analysis
