COURSE DESCRIPTION
The fall course in Discourse Analysis focuses on the social and cognitive dimensions of discourse. In relation to the social aspect, the course addresses relevant concepts such as social group, institution, power, abuse of power, counterpower, and social resistance. These and other sociological and political notions are necessary for analyzing the use of discourse in society. Regarding the cognitive aspect, the course deals, on the one hand, with some cognitive structures such as script, framing, and mental model to explain the cognitive processing of discourse; on the other hand, the course focuses on the relationship between discourse and ideology. This latter aspect is fundamental, especially in the field of Critical Discourse Analysis, where it is important to analyze the role of ideologies and discourse in the reproduction of social problems such as racism or sexism, but also in the reproduction of social resistance, such as anti-racism or feminism.
The course also reviews the main textual structures of discourse (syntax, semantics, pragmatics, rhetoric, etc.), which are key to analyzing discourse and its relationship with society and ideologies.
The course will be taught by Dr. César Colorado.
