CDA Spring Course.png

Course description:

The Spring CDA Course offers a practical introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). While the course covers key theoretical assumptions and concepts, our focus will be on how to do critical discourse analysis. Specifically, students will be introduced to different approaches to critical discourse analysis and how these approaches may be applied and combined. The course centers on three forms of discourse that are key in solidifying and defying power relations: media discourse, political-institutional discourse, and social movement discourse. However, the theoretical knowledge and practical focus of the course are also applicable to research examining other forms of discourse.

This course is particularly recommended for graduate students and researchers interested in the role of language and visual communication in constructing, maintaining, and challenging power relations. This is an introductory course and does not require previous formation in discourse analysis. However, given its practical focus, this course is also recommended for students and researchers familiar with CDA approaches who would like to strengthen their analytical methods and skills.

Apart from online class sessions, the course includes asynchronous participation with previously assigned readings and a final group activity. Class sessions will be supported by Zoom Meetings and asynchronous participation with readings and other course materials will be supported by Perusall.

This course is organized and taught by Lucía de la Presa. The last session of the course includes a Master Class by Teun van Dijk

Program:

Session 1. May 22nd, 14:00 to 16:00 (CEST time zone):

Introduction to CDA

In the first session, we will cover the origins and underpinnings of Critical Discourse Analysis as a perspective that includes a range of approaches rather than a singular method of analysis. Specifically, we will look at the following four foundational frameworks or approaches to CDA: (1) the dialectical relational approach/socio-cultural approach (primarily associated with the work of Norman Fairclough), (2) the discourse historical approach (primarily associated with the work of Ruth Wodak), (3) the social actors approach (primarily associated with the work of Theo Van Leeuwen), and (4) the sociocognitive approach (primarily associated with the work of Teun van Dijk). Key theoretical assumptions of these frameworks will be presented together with a discussion of how they might be combined in their practical application despite theoretical differences.

Session 2: May 29th, 14:00 to 16:00 (CEST time zone):

Applying and combining approaches to CDA: news media

This session focuses on the application of the previously discussed CDA approaches in the analysis of news media. A brief introduction to theoretical questions regarding news media discourse will be followed by an interactive session on how to carry out a critical discourse analysis of televised news, news articles, and news publications on social media platforms.

Session 3: June 5th, 14:00 to 16:00 (CEST time zone):

Applying and combining approaches to CDA: political institutional discourse

This third session follows the same format as the previous session but with a focus on political institutional discourse. The interactive session will center on the analysis of political speeches, political ads, and publications by political figures and political parties on social media platforms.

Session 4: June 12th, 14:00 to 16:00 (CEST time zone):

Applying and combining approaches to CDA: social movement discourse

In the third practical session, we will look at how CDA approaches may be applied in the analysis of social movement discourse, and more specifically, in the analysis of demonstrations/marches, manifestos, and social media posts.

Session 5: June 19th, 14:00 to 16:00 (CEST time zone):

CDA Workshop

With this fifth session, students will have the opportunity to put into practice the concepts and analytical steps presented in the previous sessions with a final small group activity and presentation.

Session 6: June 26th, 14:00 to 16:00 (CEST time zone):

Master Class with Teun van Dijk on Discourse and Ideology
