ABOUT THE MINICOURSE

This minicourse will tackle how deictic expressions function not only as grammatical elements but as devices that shape relationships between the speaker, the audience, and context. It will introduce you to the ways in which pronouns can construct identification or distance. You will learn about the difference between two different linguistic systems, English and Arabic, and explore how they function in distinct situations. Special attention is given to personal pronouns due to their significant role in introducing the concepts of inclusivity and exclusivity in addition to personal and professional dichotomy. Finally, we will examine ideological positioning through deixis and what it reveals about language and culture in political discourse.
