COURSE DESCRIPTION

This specialized course deals, on the one hand, with the relationship between discourse and social protest; on the other hand, it deals with the study of slogans or political slogans of anti-racist protests. We are living in a social and political context in which xenophobia and anti-racism are on the rise, hand in hand with the ultra-right. Under these circumstances, critical analysis is necessary not only to denounce these social problems, but also to create spaces for reflection on how the discourse of resistance is constructed, and how we can promote it. In this case, it is necessary to study and promote the anti-racist discourse to counteract racism and xenophobia.

The course will be taught by César Colorado, coordinator of the Research Group on Discourse and Protest (GIDYP). This specialized course will also feature Teun van Dijk, who has written the books Antiracist Discourse. Theory and History of a Macromovement (2021) and Social Movement Discourse (2024).

Program:

Session 1. July 5th (Saturday), 16:00 to 18:00 (CEST time zone): A discursive approach to anti-racist slogans: textual structure and ideological function.

Session 2: July 12th (Saturday), 16:00 to 18:00 (CEST time zone): Analysis of anti-racist slogans: semantic roles and types of process. Speech acts and rhetorical resources of anti-racist slogans.

Session 3: July 19th (Saturday), 16:00 to 18:00 (CEST time zone): The role of anti-racist slogans in the reproduction of social resistance against racism and xenophobia in the current political context.

Session 4: July 25th (Friday), 16:00 to 18:00 (CEST time zone): Master Class with Teun van Dijk: Anti-racism, discursive and historical analysis of a macro-movement of social resistance.
